    California Porsche Restorations Pre-Purchase Inspection

A friend from Connecticut is considering buying a car from CPR and asked if I could recommend someone to inspect it. He is a very nice fellow and I hope we can find someone to THOROUGHLY inspect it. Want to make sure it is not only pretty but also done correctly. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I think you won't have an issue purchasing a vehicle they have restored without a PPI.

Tell your friend not to miss this opportunity, buy a ticket, and visit CPR himself. Very good guys and a Porsche lover's paradise.

Always inspect a car at such a level in person or by another professional, no matter who restores it. No one is perfect.

You always want to do a PPI. The visit to California Porsche Restorations (CPR) is well worth the airfare. Their facility in Fallbrook, CA is FIRST CLASS. The vehicle inventory for sale/consignment is amazing and their restoration facilities state of the art. I've not only had my 63 356 painted by them, I also purchased a 73.5 911 T almost 3 years ago. It was a great experience. They will perform whatever level or extent of restoration you request. The 911 T I purchased was not totally restored but rather restored to a high quality driver just like I wanted. It's perfect for me. I tell people all the time, there's a reason why they have dozens of 911's and 356's under restoration every time you visit. They do beautiful work.

There's no substitute for seeing the place in person when the deal is made, although Mauricio does have a point about trusting CPR. If your friend were asking for a PPI of a car in San Diego not at CPR, then CPR would be one of the first choices to do the PPI.

It would also help to know what car your friend's interested in and how thorough he wants the PPI to be. CPR's online stock runs from a 1958 356A to a 2010 Cayenne--I wouldn't call the same guy to inspect both of those. And, is your friend expecting the PPI to spot the difference between an original and a reproduction switch bezel or just determine that it's a sound car?

Given all that uncertainty, I can name two Porsche business in the San Diego area:

    • Wayne Baker's Personalized Autohaus. Wayne has a lot of racing experience, his shop maintains and restores Porsches,
    • Tom Gould's TCsGarage. Tom was at Otto's Porsche in Venice before co-founding Pelican Parts. He and Bev have been very successful concouring Bev's 911E Targa.

And, of course, 25% of Porsche professionals are in Southern California.

+1 on having Wayne Baker doing a PPI. I would also contact Mark Allen at Vintage Excellence in San Diego, CA. I would always do a PPI and get my eyes on the car. Nick
