    Wooden steering wheel

    Hi,

Need some help from the steering wheel Police.

Bought a wooden steering wheel with steal core. Seller said the sw is out of a 65.

The wheel arrived today. No stamps at all.

I remember that there had been discussion allready. Someone said the number of layers and grip thickness is important, but didn't speciefied both.

How can I bee sure that it is original.
It looks very used, lot of patina, btw.

    Cheers
    Dirk

The wood wheel shown is an original wheel.

Many many discussions on numbers on hub of wood wheels. From I remember, nobody has been able to make sense of the stamped numbers.

I've checked out some reproduction wood wheels at the LitMeet and Sierra Madre Collection--I didn't spot a difference. I didn't have an original beside it so I can't say for sure but I can spot repro hockey puck horn buttons and rear view mirrors.

It looks like your recent acquisition might also include a short wheelbase dashboard top (I don't think those are reproduced) so it's plausible your wood wheel's genuine. I think reproduction wood steering wheels have only been around for five years or so (again, I'm not certain but it's only recently that I've seen them). If your wooden wheel looks to be about 50 years old it's most likely original.

If the reproductions are made in the USA it's likely the wood strips are ¹/₈ or ³/₁₆ inches thick (3.175 mm or 4.76 mm) or so while European wood stock would be even metric sizes. But, measuring a difference on the order of 0.2 mm in a finished wheel would be a challenge and repros could easily be made in Europe or with metric wood in the US.

At any rate, that photograph is not nearly detailed enough to determine whether the wheel's original or reproduction.
