    New SWB Purchase - 1968 911L

    Dear All,

I purchased a 1968 911L a few weeks ago and we have started the process of returning her to an original mechanical and finish state, except for the colour which was Dark Mettalic Green when new. In that light, we will come across questions which are not clearly addressed in the few, existing reference material that I have, namely Brett Johnson and Peter Morgan books, in addition to sales brochure, owners' manual etc. To the extent it works for everyone here, I wanted to ask some of these questions, as well as volunteer to answer others through what could be original on my car as I have history documents (window sticker, original purchase invoice, service records etc) going back to 1968.

Here's an initial list of questions:

    1. Engine Compartment: leads, metal encased or black plastic leads (mine are currently metal?) I would also appreciate if I could have a link to a set of pictures that experts would deem to be of historical value, maybe a barn find? I found this one which could do the trick, http://porsport.com/1968_911s_rally_car_barn but not sure how correct this car really is.

    2. Handle for heat control lever: red or black? Mine is currently black

    3. Wheels: all black Fuchs, ever an option? Currently all black.

    4. Headliner: black vs. beige, mine is currently black. Best source if I need a beige one?

    5. Trunk area: there is an indentation to the left of the smuggler box when looking at the windshield. Am I missing something as I have seen cars with and without "something" there. Is it related to the Webasto heater when the item is there?

    6. Engine lid seal: mine covers the top of the bumperettes, I have seen a version which does not, as it is not as wide as mine. Which one is correct?

Thank you in advance for your replies,

    Pascal

It is more likely than not to revert to Dark Green Metallic but not for at least one year as I want to do everything else first!

The black center was not an option in 68.
The wheel centers had anodized spokes and black between them.
I'm sure if you strip the black paint off, it will become evident.

The muffler tail pipe shows to exit the passenger rear bumper, not an option in 1968.
    Nice find!!!

What is engine compartment metal lead?? To best of my knowledge the heater lever is black, I believe the red knob started in 69 when a hand throttle was added. Then throttle was black, heater was red. Without a picture hard to tell about seal, but yes, it does somewhat cover part of bumper guard. A picture of the trunk indent would be nice.

I have on left side of the hand brake, the hand throttle lever, and on the right side, the heater lever. Dual pipes for exhaust because owner number 2 changed to an Ansa dual outlet "sport" muffler in the early 70s and it is still on the car, at the same time as he removed the smog equipment, and, unfortunately now that the car is on the East Coast, the heat exchangers! Will have wheels redone, thank you Harvey, although I wished you had an East Coast location!

Metal are an attempted fix for the 911SC "exploding airbox" issues. You want original Beru with RIGHT angle ends, not straight (which is lucky because straight are hard to find, and even harder to find that conduct electricity after 50 years!) Look at the FWM for pictures, there are a LOT of 68 shots in there

    2. Handle for heat control lever: red or black? Mine is currently black Black. Red is as Ed says.

    3. Wheels: all black Fuchs, ever an option? Currently all black. All black is a 1980s thing. Harvey is the Undisputed Global Fuchs expert, 68 had 5.5" black with silver spokes.

    4. Headliner: black vs. beige, mine is currently black. Best source if I need a beige one? Should be white. Stoddard.

    5. Trunk area: there is an indentation to the left of the smuggler box when looking at the windshield. Am I missing something as I have seen cars with and without "something" there. Is it related to the Webasto heater when the item is there? Webasto fuel pump? Show us photo of the area you mean.

    6. Engine lid seal: mine covers the top of the bumperettes, I have seen a version which does not, as it is not as wide as mine. Which one is correct? Never heard of a seal going that far up, is it a Porsche part? Again, send photo of offending area
