    Constipation....Cure for

Since I was 5 years old, constipation was an issue not only for myself, but occured in the family as well. My father spent the last 30 years of his life with chronic constipation relying on various pills or prescription items. None of these worked more than a few weeks or months. The point is that it appears to be a dreaded condition for millions, judging by the number of ads around today.

Hemorrhoids, as Frank has referenced - are a M A J OR hassle, and they accompany constipation. 'Drinking 8 - 10 glasses of water a day' is written as being crucial but seems to be a workout for the kidneys instead. Diet must be the key...especially if you can tolerate similar foods on a regular basis. Variety is nice, but it's not that important. Look at the demands of a horse and it becomes quite clear that diet has to serve them well. Staple foods so to speak..oats are for people as well, so here you go :

Oatmeal (water, no milk) - morning and night as a foundation. Keep in mind Oats work much better with Flax seed (ground).

Eggplant - twice daily...is a decent item that won't 'cause' constipation -- as red meat or breads can do. Buy in bulk when fresh, slice, and bake with vinegar, garlic, onion, oil (large pan)...can freeze also.

Rutabega, root vegetable. . .with all the above, 'stops' constipation. Chef knife is needed to peel safely. Then, it can be cut into small sections, and into a steam pot, or pressure cook.
    ___

    Further insight or suggestions....welcome.

I've never eaten Oatmeal, eggplant or Rutabega but with a steady diet of White Castle I can assure you that you'll never be constipated.

    I feel for you.

After back surgery a few weeks ago I had a nasty exhaust restriction. The stuck turd caused an icepick-in-the-side pain that made my kidney stone passings feel like a stubbed toe. After 3 days of over-the-counter stool softeners (the bad news is that they were SUPPOSITORIES!) my body Released The Kraken; epic BM that made me light headed and feel like I had just lost a significant and important part of me.
Once I got back on my steady diet of coffee in AM and beer in PM my constitution returned to normal. I know diuretics are not typically the answer for constipation but that's my prescription.

For the record I would like to see more sensible discussions like this in OT.

I was really looking forward to spirited conversation on this.

Maybe incontinence is a more popular topic?

    Or ED?

Frank, I appreciate your feedback...and as much as I laughed at the White Castle lunch menu, the subject of bowel health is not a real cheery topic. But chronic constipation is worth discussing.

Then there's the whole colonoscopy thing, which is recommended for all over fifty, especially in cases of family history with a problem in that area.

The basic point - that for those with constipation that has a lock on the system...to realize it can be defeated with steps taken. One item that used to be readily available and isn't, are yellow or pink grapefruits of the type homeowners have in their yards in Florida. Ruby red is all you see up North...and it's abysmal.

That's interesting; I've been thinking of starting a colonoscopy thread.

If I decide to do that I'll post some color pics of mine.

My Mom battled this condition as well (as I found out later)...and died of colon cancer. As she was dying, she told me and my brothers to get frequent colonoscopies, which we now do. I sure wish she had as well as she died far too young...take care of yourself.
