    Vintage 911S Caliper Restoration -> Ribe M7

    Hi,

    Following the wonderful article from Eric "Neunelfer", I'm rebuilding my 2.0S 1968 brake calipers. Calipers were dismantled, yellow zinc plated, Ribe bolts M8 and M7 received black zinc finition, I get new pistons, new kits...

    Everything OK excepted that I noticed that despite all the RIBE head bolts M8 and M7 are from resistance class 12K (written on the head), all my nuts are from Class 8 ??? Probably not original or ? Also, for 3 rear calipers dismantled, I've 2 type of M7 bolts - 2 sets for 11mm wrench and 1 set for 10mm wrench (metal thickness very narrow). To torque them to 25 ft.lbs (for M8) and 17 ft.lbes (for M7) class 8 seems to low.

    Any source for M7 nuts 12K preferably black Zinc (or yellow) and also M8 which should be easier to find ?
    According to PET 90135297910 should be the reference of the nuts for "S" and "L", available at Stoddard but no description to know if M7 or M6.

    When I dis-assembled my '67S calipers I found the fasteners with too much surface corrosion for my taste, and I threw them away assuming they were 8mm to the eye.

    Only when I went to assemble them after re-plating did I realize they were the weird 7mm! Yikes!

    I exhausted metric suppliers on both sides of the Atlantic looking for 7mm fasteners...let alone grade 12.

    Solution...Domestic, SAE, 5/16 inch, grade 9, Allen head bolts and same grade nuts. 5/16 inch is 7.9mm, but fit in the calipers screw bores.

    Calipers are functioning just fine under heat use with no evidence of expansion issues from the extra .9mm on the bolts.

    These metric fastener suppliers must dread our questions now. I was doing the same thing about 10 years ago. I even had plans to have a custom run of bolts made; very expensive. It was cheaper to buy core calipers just for the fasteners.

    Hi,

    Thanks Mark for you answer... it's indeed a solution.

    I ordered the M7 nuts 901.352.979.10 at my Porsche dealer and what I received is OK -> Black M7 nuts resistance class 12K.
    For the M8 nuts N.011.008.8 I received a box with a VW reference (nuts apparently for camshat...) -> Clear Zinc M8 nuts.
    Regarding the M8 fasterners with Ribe head, I received from Porsche bolts with hexagonal head class 12 -> So not conform with original.

    Regards,

    Fred

    The M7x55 Ribe bolts are components of this kit.
