SWB Owners: I need some help figuring something out

    Folks,

SWB Owners I need your help.

Could you look at your wiring harness (best place would be in the back under the engine lid by the latch)? You should see the harness running over to the passenger side tail lights.

I want to know if your harness is wrapped in electrical tape or does it have a solid sheathing over it. Also, could you look at the ground connection over on the drivers side where the ground wires go to the body. It should be on a stud with a 13 mm nut. Do you have one brown wire going to the eyelet or 2 brown wires connected to it. And last but not least I need to know if your car is a Karmann built car or not.

Here's what I'm trying to figure out. I have a Karmann and a non-Karmann that I'm working on (Both 67 912s). The non-Karmann harness was wrapped in tape and the Karmann was sheathed. The Karmann harness had 2 ground wires going to the eyelet in the engine compartment but the non-Karmann only has one. I'm just trying to figure out if these are standard differences between the 2 production locations or are these cars I have just weird.

Any help would be most useful.

last week i compared 25 webasto wiring harness, all 64-67 almost all where different...just to give you a bit of a picture how hand made those cars are.

i butchered several 912...if i find time(don`t think so) i`ll have a look how the main harness are made

    Hi Moito,

I love your work on the Webasto's. Quick question on those things since I have never had a car that had one. They were an option correct? Who installed them? The dealer or back in Germany? If it was the dealer than I could understand the differences on the harness. I would think each one would be slightly different especially if the dealer installed them.

I'm trying to determine if the core harnesses of the SWBs had basic differences determined by where they we made.

    Steve,

Funny, I worked on retaping the back part of the loom of my December 65 car today. There is some sheeting but most of the loom in the back of the car is taped. Will have to check on the grounds.

Do you know the production location of the car?

I have a '66 (March) 912 and the right side harness (with the oil level sender wires) was taped. Also believe that the ground lug has two wires.

I also have pictures of a '65 912 (Porsche) (December) wiring harness showing two brown wires to the ground with tape around the wires to the passenger and driver taillight harnesses and sheath around the two wires to the oil level sender. There is enough dirt on the sheath to indicate that it was not originally taped into the bundle, but who knows, there was prior work done to the rear metal of the car.

Thank you for the info. Could you please confirm the place of production? Karmann non-Karmann?

Being a LWB this may not be that much help, but here are some shots of a December 1968 Karmann build 912 that I had apart some time ago.
