Anyone removed the speedometer needle a 911?

I am curious as to what you used and how you did it. I am thinking of doing it on my '76 Carrera. Need to replace the gears and this is the only way of knowing of how many teeth there are. I know most everyone was sweating bullets at least those that posted here, I don't know anyone who did it without any stress.

A hemostat on the shaft and a twist-pull on the needle center worked for me.

A fork is what has been reported as working on the tach. On the speedo everyone recommends going to the pro with the right tools.

Last year, my odometer quit working, while the speedo seemed fine. I decided to fix it myself and when I put it back together, the odometer worked fine, but the speedo quit working. After that I sent it to Palo Alto Speedometer, where they fixed and returned it to me in less than a week. The price was also quite reasonable.
Send it to the pros.....you won't be disappointed.

Opening the can and removing the needle are difficult, as is replacing the needle correctly. I won’t do it myself again.
