    Carrera chain tensioner

    My carrera chain tensioners don't seem to be seated fully? I am using the original idler arms with the factory spacer. Even if I push the tensioner all the way in on the mounting bolt and tighten the 13mm nut, there is play in the spacer, about 2,5mm. Its not possible to move the tensioner further in on the bolt because when I look "behind" the tensioner and its metal against metal (when I looked at the inner part where the tensioner slides in on the bolt)

    Looking back at old pictures they were like this when I took the engine apart.

    Is this acceptable or can I do something about it?

    If the mounting boss where the 8mm stud go thru is touching the back of the chain case and torqued, you are good. I would however update idler arms, sprockets and axles for safety sake, as sprockets look like they might not be bushed. Gordon

    Looking into it. Is it possible to update my arms to add the bushings? Are the bushings available separately, having trouble locating them on the interwebs? Do I need to replace the sprockets also?

    If there is enough space to the chain I have ground some off the back of the tensioner to move it in further. Bushings for the arm are not available, either buy the arm or get modified ones from Supertec. You do not need to replace the sprockets.

    Yes I was thinking of grinding some material off the back of the chain tensioner but thought that could lead to a classic Kav move ending in ‘disaster’! I will measure the distance to the chain thanks Ed!

    So new idler arms with bushings are insanely expensive! The cheapest price I can find is $600 for a set?! Can’t find anything on Supertech’s website on their idler arms, are they more affordable?

    Don't know his cost, but he makes extension bushings to update the old style arm, I'm sure cheaper than new pieces, give him a call.

    It cost me over $800 to update with the wider idler arms and new turbo tensioners. Idler arms without bushings will gall your post that it sits on and cause a failure. I could not spend this money fast enough to get a safe engine. BTW my tech also put in the hockey puck stops on the tensioner as well.This was done 20 years ago without a problem. Chris
