Battery box deleted on 70-71 911ST - Photos

    Hi!
I am in the process of doing the bodywork on my 1970 911ST replica and now I need to deicide on battery boxes, keep them or weld them shut. Since I’m trying to make the car as historically acurate as possible I need old photos that show the welded shut battery boxes of the 1970 and 1971 race cars. I have seen that many members of this forum have large databases of old racing photos, I am thankful for all the help I can get.

    Regards,
    -Jacob

    Welcome Jacob.

From memory i think this ammendment was added to the homogolation document 3025 in August 72.
This allowed the placement of the battery within the smugglers box. I have elected to keep both of mine on my 70 ST build.

Please tell us more about your build.

    Thank you Dave!

As I also have interpreted it you are completely right, there is an image in the 3025 homologation of the battery in the smugglers box. And it says that both battery boxes can be removed. However, I know that some 70-71 cars also had at least the RH battery box removed (LaRousse’s Tour de France car included).
I guess it’s a matter of interpretation, it doesn’t say that one of them cannot be removed before August ’72, only that both can be removed and the battery placed in the smugglers box after August ’72.

Since I would like to remove at least the RH battery box to increase the air flow to the oil cooler I want to collect photos to show the scrutiniser if there is a discussion about it.

I looked att your thread on ddk, what a fantastic build! If it’s ok maybe I can ask you some questions that might come up when my build continues?

My build is a 1970 911T that was, as many like it, badly rebuilt into a 74RSR look-a-like inte 70,s or 80’s. The rusty body is now being restored by Mose’s Bil & Lack in the south of Sweden(the same company that paints many of the Koenigsegg hypercars). The engine is also currently being built, by Mittelmotor in Germany, it’s a 66mm stroke 2,4l engine. I am going for a street car but if I decide to race it one day I would like to have the opportunity to get the car homologised for historic racing.

    Kind regards,
    -Jacob

Nice project, we keep both batterie boxes on our project to fit oil coolers inside ;-)
BTW your engine is in very good hands ;-)

    Jacob,
i must confess that i haven't taken much notice of the battery box delete on the 2.3 ST cars as i decided very early to keep mine intact.

Remember, the Larousse TDF was in the prototype class Group 5, So that car doesn't count. Finding a period photo with this delete will be difficult.
Another point is that the early ST cars retained the engine cooler so the battery box delete was not as critical as on the 2.5 cars that had no engine cooler, hence the twin set up.

I am always happy to help, just send me a mail. If you do intend to apply for your HTP papers, remember to take photo's of every part whilst you assemble the car.

I look forward to seeing the progress or your build.

The removal of the battery boxex will to some extend depend om=n the Peiord and Class of car you are trying to develop.

If you apply for an HTP for a Period G2 car then you will not be able to use any Extension dated after the end of 1971 and I believe that this is relatively clear.

A Group 4 car would be classified as a Competiton Grand Touring Car (GTS) and would need to comply with the requirements of the correct periiod Homologation, Appendix J of the Period and Appendix K Section 7 and Appendix lX.

In 1971 Appendix J the following imformation can be found:

Group 3 cars were allowed the same modifications as Group 1 cars and there is a specific requirment that Battery Location cannot change.

Group 4 Cars were allowed the same modifications as Group 2 cars which clearly states that battery location is free providing it is not installed in the passenger compartment.

The only change to battery location that ocurred in the 1972 Appendix J was to allow batteries in the passsengr compartment providined that was their location on a Production car.
