    VIN Plate

    HI,

Does anybody happen to know when VIN Plates changed from 3 line to 4 lines?

    Thanks!

Looks to me like about calendar year 1971.

After hours of sorting images and finding dates for VIN's about all that I can say is that the change probably occurred for all models in September 1970. There was also a change in the VIN stamp with bracketing stars replaced by asterisks but this appears to be later by a month or two; I am very confident that the plate change was complete before the stamping change came about.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but why open a new one?

My car is missing the VIN plate on the slam panel ever since I bought it. I didn't care too much about it because the VIN stamped to the chassis is the one to prove the car's identity (at least over here in Germany). I thought that this (along with the one riveted to the A-pillar - mine is an US car) would be sufficient. Well, at least until now.
According to German law every car has to be fitted a tag - a so called Fabrikschild (production plate) - stating VIN, max gross weight, max axle load, etc. And that's exactly what my TÜV inspector wants to see. He didn't care too much about a VIN being on that plate rather than it showing the technical data needed.
As I am in need of a new plate now anyway I thought: why not do it correctly?

I could use some help in terms of the following questions:

My car is a MY '70 "S" so the correct layout should be like this https://www.stoddard.com/00070110113.html, right?
Are the numbers punched each separately or embossed as a sequence?
Is there a special "font style"?
What is the size of the digits? 4mm?
    What are the correct rivets?

    Thank you in advance!
    Greetings,
    Tom

The Stoddard plate is correct for you. Cannot help with the rest.
