Help - Engine Bay Seal Blocks

I began to install the engine bay sealing pieces (P/N 911-504-930-00) on my '70E project this morning. I recall from when I disassembled the car that there was a strip of foam insulation stuffed up behind the firewall and the rear cross member that acted like a seal for the engine bay. The pieces I purchased seem much larger and do not seem to fit nicely into the small crevice. It almost seems like they need to be cut down to fit into the crevice. How are they supposed to fit?

The last photo, which I hijacked from Dave Conklin's photos of the benchmark low mileage '70S, seems to show a wedge shape seal stuffed into the crevice.
