Thread: Koni insert question

    Koni insert question

    I’m installing a new set of Koni Front inserts into 65/66 911 Boge strut. The installation instructions see item number five, calls for an extra buffer above the larger stop buffer number 4. The original set up did not include this buffer. I’m inclined not to install it but thought I’d ask if anyone else has experience with It

    When my 67 912 was done, it had a spacer of some sort in the bottom the strut tube. Don't know if it was to make up for not having the extra buffer on top? I didn't question the mechanic and don't know if it was left in the tube or not when new Konis went in??? { Boge strut housing/tube }

    This is what I was attempting to convey concerning your situation.

    Item #5 is the upper strut mount in the inner fender, its not a buffer.

    Sorry I got my numbers mixed up, Ed. The question should have been is number three a separate buffer that gets included on top of the stop buffer number two inside the metal cover? The original set up only had the large stop buffer.

    Yes, we generally leave out the #3 separate buffer. Reason being most every car is lower in front than how it was delivered, we don't want the car to be riding on the shock buffers, in fact if it is really low we'll cut off the bottom buffer segment since it is mostly hollow any way. We just want to leave enough buffer to prevent the shock from damaging the internals if it goes full jounce on a lowered car. Before installing the shock put the outer cover on and compress the shock until you feel it hit the bump stop, make a mark with a sharpie on the strut body at the lowest point the cover gets to, now set the car down and have some one push down hard on the fender, see how far you are from your sharpie mark. That's your suspension travel before hitting the bump stop.
