Would this survive in the engine compartment? Or is it a cabin only gauge?

Should be fine... the old Chris and Bertram we owned had them on the dash, but I've seen them mounted on or in the engine boxes of wooden boats.

Thanks Russ.
It will go in Doug's (Never 2 Many) 69 2.7 POLO. My engine has 16000 miles. Engine hours would be a wild guess. The 69 engine has 0 hours and is sitting on a engine stand.
Aluminum hood, steel bumper, aluminum splitter, and a lot of other subtle body mods.

Chris, I have a Bucher tractor that has one with about 2,400+ hrs on it, with most to the life sitting outside, also mounted in a pretty hot location, working great will be adding more hours the next couple days mowing at the old farm.
Best Regards
If you want the hour meter to be reasonably accurate, be sure to wire it so that it only records while the engine is actually running, not simply when the ignition is in an on position.
Good point.
Where would be the best place to pick up power if in the engine compartment.
