    Formula 1 Commentator MURRY WALKER passes

    Sad to hear that the "Voice" of Formula 1 has passed.

    Sad indeed, though inevitable. I grew up listening to his commentaries on F1 and will remain indebted to him as his enthusiasm sparked a lifetime of F1 for me...

    Agreed he was a huge asset to F1 and for many he was the reason that they could and did follow it

    He also was so down to earth and self depreciating almost to the extent that it hid his knowledge and the massive amount of research he did in preparation for each race.

    Murray was very touched when my car club named the TV room in the clubhouse in his honour back on 2019.

    A snug room off a landing to pop on to watch TV and even have a snooze the name and some of his memorabilia a very apt use of the previously nondescript corner of the big building. Home of the British Grand Prix trophy seen displayed in the video of the occasion is kept yards away — Murray would have attended most since championship started Silverstone in 50 and then commentated on most since switching form motorbikes to F1 late 70s.


    Some of the clubs senior members / sport’s personalities were there to mark the occasion

    Tom who explains on the video how the idea came to fruition was the club’s chairman at time and is ex CEO Rolls Royce Motorcars among his other senior automotive industry roles. Neat idea to name TV room of automotive club afterMurray.

    Both Murray and James Hunt who used to commentate together before Hunt’s early death had been club members. Hunt might’ve been an F1 world drivers champion but he hasn’t got a room in club named after him there; he had to content himself with his club squash team photos still on display in the squash viewing gallery.

    Murray doesn’t mention it but one of the club’s restaurants is named after another famous (sadly now also late) member Sir Stirling Moss, so he is in illustrious company. However Stirlings is at the RAC country club at Woodcote Park that fans of motor racing will know lends its name to the famous Silverstone corner (Woodcote Park is in Surrey near the Epsom downs racecourse home of the Derby) so not the same St James Pall Mall historic main clubhouse.

    When things reopen again (hopefully soon) in London it might be nice to invite a few enthusiast pals who have been to club as my guest before to go back and watch race there
    and raise a glass to Murray. Or better still rerun a classic race on video with him and Hunt commentating: maybe time Mansell won at Silverstone or Damon Hill as world champion. Saw that he commented that those were special races for him. RIP Murray for many of us forever the Voice of the Sport. We could take some some fruit sweets —something “made to make your mouth water” even if now forced to make do with inferior, not the proper originals !
