    Replacing space saver tyres

Taking my Carrera3.0 to Tasmania for a rally next month.

The space saver tyre is as old as the car - so 43 years old. So should I have a puncture in the middle of nowhere the space saver might work, but then it might not.

The way I see it I have 3 options

    1. Buy a new spare wheel from my local Porsche centre

    2. Find a replacement space saver tyre and replace. If I go for this- where do I get the specialised tyre? Is fitment straightforward or is specialised knowledge / tools required?

    3. Borrow / buy a 6 x 15 wheel and stick a economically priced non directional tyre on it

I bought a space saver from Harvey years ago. Replacement involved partially inflating the tire.

Since you want it as a back up during the rally, I guess a driving event not staged, I would keep it simple and opt for3. Ideally the same tire as the other 4 so if in case one tire get shot you will have a pleasant alternative to further enjoy the rally/ trip and buy a new tire when you are back home.

In a sort of while you are in there, I keep full size spare as your option 3 for long distance and have a spacesaver mounted on an alloy for around town and move both between cars.
But as for your concern on the space saver condition, just pump it up and inspect it, and when done remove the center of the Schrader valve to dump the air and with a bit of help it will fold up nicely. as to mounting a spacesaver the guy that did mine (removed from steel wheel & mounted on nice alloy) he said it was a Bitch!! and really did not want to do many more!

I have also removed a space saver for another board member. It was not the highlight of my day. I have a corghi master tire machine that utilizes rollers to break the bead free. The roller don't contact where they need to when the tire is collapsed. Tire has to be partially inflated. Fun fact once one bead breaks the tire retracts and the other is a sever PITA. It took me close to an hour to do this without damaging the tire or wheel. Might have been slightly easier if I had access to the a rim clamp machine that utilized a "shovel" bead breaker. Regardless I'd rather not ever do it again.

I would opt for a full size spare so if you do have to use it, you could actually drive on it. A space saver is just to slowly limp to the closest service station.
A part isn't purchased until paid.
