Thread: Spark Plugs from Factory/Dealer?

    Spark Plugs from Factory/Dealer?

I've had my 911 for about 30 years now. During that time, I also owned a 356, a 912 and a Boxster. From time to time, I have had the occasion to buy parts from Porsche itself and "OEM" from other suppliers and compared them side by side. Even though they are in theory the same manufacturer, I've seen obvious differences in the specs. Some times they are just a little better. Sometimes they are noticeably better and worth the extra expense. Sometimes they are hard to tell the difference and not apparently worth the extra cost - which can be a big difference. Because I own Porsches for the quality they had when new, and want to continue with that experience, I often choose to spend the extra amounts.

So here's my question. I just looked at the price of factory spark plugs at $41 each, compared to about $10 for non-factory plugs. That's a pretty big difference. I'm interested in hearing what folks have to say about just what a factory plug can have for 4x the cost that the "cheap" ones. I have heard bad things about spark plugs these days. So maybe $10 plugs in the "old days" were fine, but with the lower quality coming out, maybe there is a difference here.

I just put plugs in my 14 Cayman S, from Porsche @$20 each. For as often as I’ll do that it’s ok with me, + I didn’t want to do the research to find the correct plug. Gave them my VIN and they gave me the plugs, it’s a new world and I’m a 50 year P mechanic.

Not real high end, or top notch of a plug, but AC Delco are fairly reliable. If you can find them in your size.

I've been using Bosch plugs for over thirty years. The old style copper cores are not made any more.I've received Bosch spark plugs from my various suppliers.I contacted Ed Mayo,he recommened NGK.I cross referenced the Bosch to NGK.Bosch numbers are hotter the lower the number, and the opposite for NGK.Installed NGK's and I defenitley noticed the car ran better,NO JOKE.I've owned the car since the early 1990's and could definitly tell the improvement.

I've got the newer BPR7ES in mine. They are great. NGK have been my go-to plug brand for years.

Out of curiosity, are you using stock wires? I have stock Beru wires with a factory coil and Pertronics. Hopefully they are compatible.

Not just stock wires and coil, I'm still running points...

Thanks. Sounds like I will be ok then.I was a bit concerned about the added resistance in the high tension leads.
