Maybe someone can explain how I was having trouble getting into first but the rest of the gears no problem. I thought if a clutch goes bad, you can't shift into any gears, only 5200 miles on the clutch.

As Chuck says...nice!
On the 901, I find (as do others) that indexing it into 2nd first and then pulling the shift lever into 1st will work perfectly every time. Eliminates the grind and the issues associated with getting it into 1st. Now it is just a habit when I am starting the car from a dead stop.
I also know some of the old expert autocross magicians that used 901 transmissions well into the '90s and later had short-shift kits. I much prefer the OG shifter and don't mind the long throws. When I had the short-shift kit in, I still had to put it in 2nd (no clutch release) before pulling down into first to ensure it worked every time.
And just in case, one of those magicians wrote a book on autocrossing an air cooled car, and there are a bunch of internet and panorama articles on Dwight Mitchell available on the internet with clues on how he set up his car. Admittedly it is a lwb not a swb, but maybe some of it resonates? Heck, maybe there is reference material on this site, I'd defer to Chuck. But both preferred the 901 transmission for reasons you're showing in the video (and both ran 2.7/2.8 engines off of it, with more than stock juice). Apologies if you're already aware...

@Chuck Thanks!
@Rick I haven't heard of Dwight, thanks for sending the info to me!!! It's a bummer I can't find any videos online of him driving.
Looks fun!

Moar autocross!
Our cars were meant to be driven! The car was as much fun to drive on Pocono speedway as it was I-84.

I once had debris from a bearing cage migrate forward under braking and obstruct shifting into first and third.

I tried Auto X only once... Not my cup of tea ...
But have the greatest admiration for all those who do it ...
Driving with my old buddy Randy Wells (former Northern Pacific SOLO 2 class champion) in the canyons, is like driving with a 'road surgeon' ... Never been with a more precise driver in my life...
Cheers guys and keep on kick'n ass ...![]()
