    Diagnosing/Repairing/Replacing '73 Expansion Tank/Vent Box

I'm experiencing bad gasoline fumes, both when the car is sitting in the garage and while driving. I did find a badly deteriorated gasket on the fuel filler cap, it's been replaced. I have not let the car sit or driven it since I replaced the gasket but I thought I would check the "Vent Box" (as it is referred to my parts book) behind the fuel gauge. The vent box has been mentioned often in this forum as a likely source of fumes.

I was able to get the hoses off but it does not want to come out through the front - it looks like I may have to remove the defroster control box, which doesn't look fun. I'm wondering if I remove instruments it will come out through the interior. What is the best/easiest way to remove it?

Once I get it out, I can test it by filling with water and looking for leaks, correct? (I read this on this forum). If it's leaking, can I seal it up? What should I use? I can buy a new one on Pelican for $240....

    thanks for any input

did some more searching on the forum and found this: "I figured out that I didn't need to remove the clips or move the assembly. Instead, all I did was move the front hood shock and the box, rubber band and all, slid right out." - I will try this.

still need some guidance on diagnosis/repair....
