    Hand throttles

I’d like to learn more about the hand throttles.

Did they come in the early 911s? (65 to 67)
Were they always next to the brake lever?
When did they show up and when did they end?

I know they could came in the 356 on the dash.
Were they ever standard? For a few years?
    Are they for cold weather?
Were they only an option on 356?
And yet, I never saw one on a 912, with the same engine.

Are they only for starting the car, or were they a form of cruise control?

I often thought they were dangerous, being possibly wrongly adjusted, or a kid pulls one up, and you forget to put it back down, so it seems like a weird feature.

I thought they were a feature of MFI cars for cold start. However, I am new to early 911s, so I am interested in some feedback as well.

I also have a question. When you set the hand throttle when cold why does the RPM's increase quickly as the car warms up. You can't walk away from the car when cold and hand throttle in use.

When the MFI system was introduced Porsche used to supply cold start instructions in several languages for MFI equipped models in form of small folded card with a punched hole to suspend it where visible to first user.. An example of this folded card was photographed on this old thread:

    https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...tle-adjustment

This is the section (in English) explaining the factory recommended procedure from that ( as posted by beh911):

Seem to recall the drivers’ manual has a section on cold start procedure.

My 1973.5 has the hand throttle for cold start. The PET shows it for all cars 68 to 77.

Because the mixture is leaning out as the engine warms up so the idle speed automatically increases as the mixture becomes more ideal.

1966 Build date, sale date 1967. Karmann 912 with a hand throttle. Car was retrofitted to a 6 cylinder MFI engine but the hand throttle was stock. Yes, you have to baby sit it as the RPM's will jump. I'll go start it later today as roads are wet and I like my floor pans as is. 10-15 minutes for operating temps. Go look at the Brembo thread for some of what I've done.

911MRP's photo was spot on to what I do.

Generally 1968S's were the first cars to have hand throttles , the '67S and '68 normals did not . I believe all the 911's had hand throttles after 1968 . The hand throttle is somewhat of a manual choke until the engine is warm , definitely
    not for cruise control .
