It is getting difficult to find a parking spot outside my club on St James

Too many fifties Mercedes hogging the parking spots outside the Royal Automobile Club in London’s Pall Mall

    IMG_6212.jpg

One of these cars alone said to be worth £300m

It was a privilege to be invited to the service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey last Wednesday:

He was a very polite and charming man. Often at the clubhouse. His home in a Mayfair mews was less than a mile away and travelled by scooter. The baconies feature images of the car

The 1955 feat of driving 1000 miles on roads at around 100mph average by Moss in that 300 SLR (with the help of Jenks famously using his “loo roll” pace notes) is held in high regard by racers such as Elford, Haywood Redman

Woodcote Park the second clubhouse in the country is where his Oscar is stored in the motor house and this was renamed in his honour: https://youtu.be/86X8KHaEZcU?si=6n6mAU4XjQpDxFuf

Went the there on Saturday in the 1949 Bristol

A versatile racer the Mille Miglia win at was a high point that draws much admiration from even top racers but it was not a fluke, Sir Stirling won 40 percent of the races he entered. His scrapbooks are held in the club’s library make interesting reading showing the versatility that few can hold a candle to (perhaps fellow Londoner Vic Elford comes secund in this regard).

    Not just old Mercedes

A little summary of the cars that have been parked inside the clubhouse on St James for the enjoyment of the members and guests in the 2024 yearbook:

    https://www.flipsnack.com/769867EEFB...book-2024.html

The club’s motoring team do an outstanding job. Each car or motorbike is taken in and out of the rotunda using this approach.

During some busy weeks there can be several swaps to link the exhibit to an event taking place.

Nerve racking for those involved as some can be a tad pricy and or irreplaceable rarities.

The RAC has been at the heart of things ever since the dawn of motoring — this one of the many trophies that are owned but the club — snapped this one when I was there earlier this week

Wow! Thanks for showing the London to Brighton Trophy. Such an historic event! Does the Royal Automobile Club own any sort of a car collection?

There is a small heritage collection in the historic motorhome at the Woodcote Park
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abKLhfzRgLs
It’s the second clubhouse (essentially a country club), the collection includes several cars the club members use for the London to Brighton events. Also long term club member the late Sir Stirling Moss’ Osca is stored in the club’s motorhome.
    IMG_1650.jpg
There are links to between Woodcote Park which dates back to the domesday Book and parts of North America through the Lords Baltimore
    IMG_1652.jpg
Lord Baltimore is credited as the founder of one of the 13 colonies, Maryland, through the procurement of the colony charter from King Charles I of England on June 20, 1632 and subsequent Lords, his descendants, have owned Woodcote Park.

The London to Brighton Event is not a race the RAC’s (International) Tourist Trophy) is said to be the worlds oldest race still being run today. A handsome trophy.
    IMG_1653.jpg
This link has an article about it

    https://sportscardigest.com/history-...-race-profile/

A bend at Silverstone race track is named after Woodcote Park and the famous Gold British Grand Prix trophy’s belongs to the RAC (not as some might think to Silversone’s owners the BRDC). It is thought it was given to the RAC by member Rolls

Lot of history in the old place Chuck.

Snap of the British Grand Prix trophy I took when it was being cleaned - it’s not in the clubhouse at present it’s on the road as part of a touring F1 exhibition going around the world.
