    Porsche's Use of Heat Shrink Tubing

    I recently participated in a concours event. I was given a one point deduction because two of my spade connectors in my 65 911's engine bay lacked heat shrink tubing. A number of people I have spoken to since then, including my mechanic who has been working on early Porsche engines for the past 60 years, said that Porsche did not use heat shrink tubing on these particular type of electrical connectors. Can anyone shed some light on the subject. Thanks.

    Which connectors in particular? I think in general heat shrink has been used since the 356, but connectors into plastic sleeves didn't.

    I believe the judge was referring to the spade connector shown in the attached photo.

    It would have never had the blue plastic piece. I usually cut off the blue plastic collar and crimp with a small piece of black shrink tubing.

    That wire is from what I remember a 90 deg TE connector without any heat shrink. So, the spade you have on there isn’t correct, blue sheath or no,,,

    This is what I have on the 1971.
    I don’t know if it’s perfect, but sure sounds like what Michael describes.
    I always thought it was a little weird and unfinished.

    I have connectors like this in other cars, 90 degrees, but they have a vintage looking moulded black rubber cover. Not shrink Wrap. Now that I look at it, it cannot really have a cover.

    Sometimes they are called flag terminals.

    Also, my wire is black and comes around from back, around the dome of the fan shroud.
    And goes thru a small yellow zinc bracket.

    The photo below shows the black wire and little bracket. Is from a 72S, that I did some work on.

    There are several flags available, but none look like an exact match.
    This one on eBay, was the closest look I have found.

    Thanks Scott for the photo. Is that part the 90 deg TE connector mentioned by 70SATMan? Where would I find the part that I need?

    I would try Kroon for anything electrical connection and wiring.

    I don’t think Porsche used heat shrink. They used plastic sheathings for wire routing and thin rubber wire end protectors, that looks like heat shrink.

    Porsche used heat shrink but not on the earlier cars and never on terminals. The straight terminals always had neoprene sleeves. The one on the pictures is a modern AMP type terminal. Often the angled terminals had no sleeves, or pvc sleeves when used on a thermotime switch or MFI valve etc.
