FA: 1967 Porsche 912 Sports Purpose

    Sold

If you wanted to build a fun weekend 912 with a sports purpose look how would you do it?

The owner of this car built what he thought would be a cool looking fun to drive car without breaking the six-figure bank. A clean Sports Purpose Light Ivory 912 with 911R elements. He found a one of the best 1 owner 1967 Porsche 912 cars he could that lived all its life in the Los Angeles area. This car had an incredible history where the first owner John S. bought it from Circle Porsche Long Beach on July 1st 1967, he kept an amazing log book for the life of the car that details date/miles/gas fills/oil changes. John also regularly serviced the car at the dealership with all maintenance tickets pulled from the service book and then a phenomenal amount of care was done through independent shops after that. On top of that the original owner’s manual, tool kit, tire jack, sales brochures from the dealership, original touch up paint pen, license plate frames from the selling dealer all remained with the car. Everyone wants this level of history when they buy a classic Porsche but almost NONE of them have this. I would say only 5% of all Porsches have this level of complete undeniable history.

When the current owner bought the car it needed restoration. It was taken apart and painted throughout in the original light ivory color. The original steel bumpers were painted in the same color but then put away in storage – a set of lightweight 911R style fiberglass bumpers were put in their place. All the trim was chromed or refinished, the trim that is missing from the car is included separately but also restored and ready to reinstall if the buyer wanted to go back to stock configuration. All rubber replaced, all suspension bushings and part replaced, brakes restored. The original steel wheels are all date matched to the car, they were restored with new chrome and new tires installed along with rechromed hub caps and crests – then all of this was put in storage but would take no time to reinstall back on the car. LED headlights were install along with LED lights on the turn and running bulbs as well. A set of Maxlite reproduction Fuchs were sourced to run with the sports purpose look. The interior is a custom look Tobacco leather throughout with green Tartan seat inserts. A set of GTS Classics sport seats were installed along with the rest of the new interior. 3 point retractable seat belts were added for safety. Palo Alto did the gauges, they made 2 tachometers – a stock 6000RPM one and a special 7300RPM for the Sports Purpose look.

This leads us to the drivetrain. John Benton of Benton Performance was brought in to rebuild and improve the engine and transmission. John built a 1720cc high revving engine with all his special tricks. I’ve know John myself for 25 years and I couldn’t think of a better person to have build a 912 engine for me. The engine is powerful, it pulls all the way up to 7000RPM without a problem. Forged pistons, Solex carburetors properly jetted, and a special M&K stainless steel muffler with twin tips make this a very deluxe engine. Full flow oil system and aluminum oil cooler keep it running cool clean and reliable. The original transmission was a 4 speed that John converted to a 5 speed with a tall 5th gear for quiet freeway driving.

    5000 miles since restoration.

Modern records are all included from the second owner. They include $28,000 to Benton Performance, $6100 to GTS Seats, $1000 M&K muffler, $27,000 in paint and assembly, $2800 to Palo Alto Speedometer, $4000 in restored original wheels and Maxlite Fuchs and tires, $thousands in various parts from Sierra Madre, Stoddard, Pelican. All of this work was done Pre Pandemic and since then prices for this type of work have gone up significantly! The total cost to buy & build the same car today would be well over $100,000 today.

In summary this is a ready to go car that has had all the hard work already done. You will not find another car with more records and documented history as this car. The drivetrain was done by the best guy. 912s are one of the smartest choices in the entire collector car market let alone the air-cooled Porsche world. They always appreciate over time and their universal coolness make everyone that sees them smile.

I can deliver to Monterey car week August 2024.

    Original Equipment
The current theme of the car is a Sports Purpose 912 with 911R elements. The build has a backup pan to go back to original. Included with the purchase are most of the original parts to bring it back to an original car. Also there is an extra hide of the same Tobacco leather includes and extra Tartan material.
    · Original steel bumpers – painted to match the car and license panel
    · Original trim polished
    · Original date matched steel wheels rechromed with tires
    · Original hub caps restored with restored chrome crests
    · Rain tray under decklid grille
    · Original restored chrome bumperettes front/rear
    · Original front & Rear seats
    · Original Tachometer rebuilt by Palo Alto
    · Original Steering Wheel covered in leather

Or the current build could be taken up a notch with further 911R elements such as:
Weight Loss Parts – 911R taillights, Plastic rear windows, plastic door handles, fiberglass hood, racing bucket seats, partial interior delete. PORSCHE side script decal and sponsor decals.
Performance parts – wilder track-oriented suspension upgrades (just look on ElephantRacing.com for options). The platform is done, car is sorted out, changing it further will be very easy because all the hard work has been done.
