Thread: Ventilation Control Panel Cable Installation?

    Ventilation Control Panel Cable Installation?

I took my dash apart several years ago while rebuilding my car and, even though I took pictures, I still haven’t hooked my ventilation control panel back up correctly. Is there a schematic that shows where the cables attach to the lever arms on the dash panel and where / how they attach to the air box under the cowl on a ‘71 911?

I’ve found some similar threads but they are for later cars and / or not complete. If there’s an idiots guide to this somewhere I’d really appreciate it.

With winter approaching I probably should finish getting my ventilation / heater put back together and working….

Picture from parts book likely most help. I like to install these before too much other stuff is in the way. Not a job I enjoy.

Okay so attached is a photo of my ‘74 before I rebuilt the car so I could reference it. I’m just finishing up a ‘73 and literally just installed my controls and cables this morning. In the car the longest cable attaches to the top slider(fan)2nd longest cable goes to the middle slider, and the shortest on the bottom. Looking at the frunk the longest cable as you can see goes to farthest connection slider, the 2nd longest cable attaches towards the front of the car, and the shortest attaches on the back side closest to where the cables come up through the car. Hopefully this is clear enough. Thanks Joe

    All,

Thanks for the replies and the info. The pictures and descriptions are very helpful. I pull out the parts manual and look there as well.

I just sort of threw everything together when I was moving last year so I didn’t loose any parts and now I need to get it done properly.

    Thanks again.

.... and not a bad time to maybe lightly lube the cables? If they are old it might help them slide more easily.

There is a slight jog on the end that attaches to the panel. If you are using your old ones, they probably have metal memory of the route through the firewall. They only slot into the levers one way.

If they are new, it can be an abosolute beast getting them to follow the route through the firewall, and god help you if you bend them the wrong way --they never want to bend a different way again -- you will struggle to keep or get them attached at the control panel, because they will rotate away from the direction you need.

This was one of my least favorite jobs ever on the car. Top 5 for sure.

    Good luck.

I am not sure how to reconnect the tubes from the air distribution boxes to the fan/blower (central) housing. Should I loosen it, or continue to try to wiggle them. There must be an easier way to connect them? Does the central housing come apart without removing it from the car?

If you're speaking of the beige cardboard tubes in post 4, the tubes are like an accordian, ie. they can stretch somewhat. If they are exactly the right length I shorten them as much as possible (by pushing hose shorter) so that they will just fit in the space, slide each end on one pipe and slightly stretch tube to reach the other end. If you are cutting new tubes to fit length is critical.
