    Fuel PRE-pump on a '72 MFI Car - Do I need one?

    Hi all,

Stumbled across this fuel pre-pump on the SMC website while I was building an order of mostly fuel ssytem parts for my recently acquired, but non-running '72 911. It sure sounds nice in the description (below):

"Fuel pre-pump for all models. It is designed to work as a pre-pump in 6 Volt systems or as a pump with higher fuel flow in 12 Volt systems. This pump is used to work in addition to your existing mechanical fuel pump. The pre-pump improves fuel flow, providing better performance and helps your engine start easier after sitting for a while. At 12V max voltage the pump is operating at about 100 L/hr at 0.15 bar; at 6V it is operating at about 50 L/hr and 0.075 bar."

Honestly, I don't even know yet if my existing factory electric fuel pump even works. But if it does, I want to make sure it will last as long as possible given that they cost around $750 new. This pre-pump is $130. It seems like this might be akin to a "hard start" kit one would install on a home AC unit. Do I need this thing and am I thinking about it correctly?

    Thanks in advance.

That's a pump the 356 guys use to prime their carbs after a long sit. Your electric pump should be in the rear by the left sway bar mount. If it is dead, you'll need the expensive one. They are easy to remove, clean, and bench test though.
