Thread: SWB Koni front strut differences

    SWB Koni front strut differences

I noticed that the front struts in '68 S seems to have slightly different design. Both are Koni, left is stamped 5/68 and right 3/68 or 8/68 (likely the later). Left narrows downs sharper as right one narrows more smoothly. Is this design change made by Koni at some point of time or have they had parallel production lines with slightly different tooling? I believe 67-68 S should have sruts with sharp bends. I have tried to investigate this, incidentally I have came across at least two sets for sale that have one strut with sharp bends and one with smooth bends.

I have a pair of 9/66 stamped Koni’s with the sharp taper and a single 2/68 stamped Koni with the gradual taper. Not sure of the exact date of the design change. Curious if others have more info.

never noticed the gradual taper on a 67S have had one of the last ever built 68L (also koni)--it had the gradual.
have no fotos of early 68 axles to determine the changeover....

My goal is to have right parts for my car, I believe they have installed matching struts in the factory. Likely over the lifespan of the car one strut has been replaced and that is causing the mismatch. While I’m now fixing the leaking insert I’d like to make it to correct factory spec again. All the 67S I have seen have struts with sharper bends. Not so much data on 68S available, my assumption is that it should be same as 67, but then at what point the smoother version was installed? My car is 6/68 so it is fairly late - should it actually have struts with gradual taper instead?

I can double check it but it looks more like 2/68, than 8/68. My friend has a ‘68s so I’ll try to take a look at his as well.

Got it, period correct. There is a chance your car was built when parts transitioned. I imagine proving that would be nigh impossible.

Friend of mine reported that he has also 2/68 with gradual taper, so to designs could have lived parallel for a while?
