Thread: Yellow wire indicator stalk 1973t

Question Yellow wire indicator stalk 1973t

Sorry for al the questions, but the wiring in my car is somewhat butchered by the PO, it's the final step of getting the car back on the road after 30 years I his shed.

I'm having trouble finding the correct way of finding the correct routing for the yellow wire on the 1973t indicator stalk.

This is how I think it should go. (Just connect yellow to yellow)

But the schema tels me something different:

In both cases I don't get why the yellow line ends in a a connector but it's not connected to any other yellow. And if it connects to the other yellow, where is that connection? I can't seem to find it. But if it connects to 'itself' why is there a connection in the first place?

Edit: should it connect to terminal 56 on the light switch? But that leaves one connection open?

I just purchased this ‘72 - ‘73 911 wiring diagram from www.vintagewiringdiagrams.com and have not studied the circuit in question, but thought this excerpt might give you another visual perspective.

Thank you! I didn't know that was a thing, I'm buying one too!

No, I don't know what circuit function that may have been for, never have seen it used. As I recall there is a yellow male and female, just plug them together. There is a yellow male and female on the trunk side, that one is part of # 50 circuit that goes to the starter solenoid.

Ah I have been fighting with this for days now.

    Situation was:
All indicators worked accept front left. Hazards same deal. Side marker lights worded fine. So I thought easy fix just add good ground. As I only got about 6v on that left front indicator light. But that didn’t fix it.
So I checked wires for continuity all fine. I checked the ground of the relay. Fine too.
Ok so I decided to add an additional ground to the relay just for good measure. That’s when the real problems started.

The hazards stil work (accept front left) but the indicators stopped working. Parking light is still working as is main beam. So I thought the indicator switch was at fault. And that seems to be the case. I get 12v in on the switch but no 12v out on black/green and black/white. If I bridge these the lights do work (again accept front left)

I cleaned the old switch thoroughly, even in an ultrasonic cleaner. And the switch really looks mint all corrosion on the outside terminals is gone. Everything on it still works accept indicators.

So I ordered another used switch. That throws exactly the same behavior. So now I’m doubting if I’ve got two bad indicator switches or did I miss something? Next step is buying a new switch. But before I commit to that I thought I’d check.

As far as I can tell wiring is old at places but no broken wires or big resistance anywhere in the wires. Only thing different in my car is the yellow wire on the light switch which goes to the white/black wire is not connected as I can not seem to find a spare yellow wire.

The real problem is that the switch is not a true 73 911 switch but a later replacement switch. The stalk is a dead giveaway.

Okay I humbly have to admit I'm a bit of a moron. I was completely ready to take out the entire front harness. But as a lost resort just swapped out the fuses before I did. The fuse seemed visibly in order but replacing solved all my issues. Lesson learned, and I'm on the lookout for a blade style fuse pannel upgrade.

Thanks anyway. This place is a goldmine!

And that is a good reason not to just "look" at connections, but to get out the test light or multi meter. You aren't the first !
