    Alternator noise test advise

At low rpm’s am hearing a noise that is loudest at the top of the alternator. The noise just started. Alternator is original with brushes changed at 110,000 miles and nothing else, and now at 270,000 miles.

Pretty sure I know the answer, but will I hurt anything by removing the fan belt, then starting the engine? I cannot see how this would damage anything, but it would isolate the problem.
    Thanks
    Steve

As you said, remove the belt for testing.
