380 mm steering wheel - lether cover

Hi guys, I have a 380 mm hard plastic steering wheel, it's in good shape, but I would like to have it leather covered.

Is there someone that sells a decent kit, or could someone recommend a good place to send it to?

    Thanks

    Henry-

There is an oufit called Alan Gunn Leather Accesories in Florida. They sell the kit you need. They are, however, quite slow. I ordered a kit for a 380mm wheel, and it took 6 weeks to get it. I ended up not using it because it was too big for the grip diameter of my rubber rimmed wheel. They do make kits for the various kinds of 380mm wheels. I thought that I had ordered the correct one, but maybee not. I ended up going to a local leather store and buying a suitable scrap. I used the AGLA cover as a template that I transfered to paper and then modified to make a cover of the proper size. So, you bcould try your luck with AGLA or just do it yourself. AGLA's kits are about $70. The leather scrap I bought was $15.

You also might want to consider more than one layer of leather in order to build up the grip diameter of the wheel a bit. This was done on factory ST wheels.

My AGLA kit is for sale if anyone is intersted.

    Thanks Scott,

Is there anyway to tell if your AGLA will fit my wheel? If it does I'll buy it from you for the $70 you paid. If I tell you my diameter, would that help?

380 mm steering wheel - leather cover

    Henry,
You have a 914 wheel. It will work fine on a 911. Unlike the old wives tales that say the splines on the 914-4 wheel are different than a 911...they aren't and it will fit fine. Years ago I had a 914-4 leather wheel in sorry shape recovered by a regular local upholstry shop for about $100. It looks great. I agree with the previous message that you may want two layers of leather or a one very thick one over the plastic. You will have to reposition the turn signal cancellation ring on the back of the wheel to work on your 911. It's easy. Just copy the one on your 911 wheel or use it and redrill the screw hole to fit. (You'll see how this needs to be done when you look at your old 911 wheel.) Regarding the company in Florida that's mentioned, their kit may work ok. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with them recovering an old Momo wheel. They tried but could never get that firm Momo wheel feel and look. Maybe they do better on Porsche wheels.
