Has anyone replaced rear seats with a shelf?

I have seen many total deletes of the rear seats, ala RS and RSR, but I would like to retain the functionality of the shelf, which the folded down rear seats provide, but without the weight. Are there any packages available for just a rear shelf which bolt into the existing hardware or will I need to fab one?

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Shelf

I believe Tweeks used to offer this option.

The shelf unit, as I recall, included speaker grill opennings in the voids where the seat buckets would be.

I don't know if it is still being offered.

For a while, Porsche made such an item. It's a plastic assembly with two little doors for access to the space which people's bottoms might occupy with a seat.

The story I recall is that the back seats of soft window Targas were deemed too unsafe for Americans (circa 1968?) so the later soft window cars were supposed to have these in the US. But, the only one I recall seeing was in a Polezei Targa.

It was 901.522.013.40 Luggage Deposit with Perlon Carpet or 901.522.014.40 Luggage Deposit with Velour Carpet. It's in my hardcopy parts book, but Porsche removed the legend from the "Porsche Classic" parts software.

Porsche is barely admitting such things ever existed, but you might be able to find one which was removed from an old Targa.

Thanks Jim and Mr. Sacramento (not 'the Govenator') I presume,

I did a little more research and discovered the shelf was used in the RS America as well, but there seems to be a lot of concern as to whether there is any weight savings. I would think one fabbed of FG would resolve the weight issue, including the little doors like in Dwane's police car. Never tried laying out FB, but it is worth a try.

I have one of the original ones in my car- it is not a weight savings. The shelf is made of wood, and could be pretty easily replicated by a cabinet maker. I'll post pictures later, but I like it (have a roll bar, so the back space isn't usable anyway).

Just curious: anyone know what one of these is worth? I'm sure it would be tough to determine, due to tiny supply/tiny demand.
