    Converting LWB to SWB

Someone has asked me to convert an '83 SC to SWB. It should make for an exiting ride as he plans to get down to about 900kgs, with fibreglass wings, bonnet, plastic side and rear windows, no underseal, wind up windows etc.

Does any one know how later LWB driveshafts can be matched up with SWB trailing arms and hubs?

    Nick,
The axles are the least of your worries !!! This sounds like a 50K project. The rear quarter panels have to be changed for starters.
Best bet would be to talk your customer OUT of that project. Give him a better idea..........

    Nick,
Another idea would be to have him backdate his car to the 65-73 look, but as far as going SWB, it's a much bigger job!

It has been a big thing overseas to "backdate" the later cars to the early look. Curt A. on this board has a very nice 88 Carrera backdated to the early look. Great handling and reliable.

    LWB toSWB?

Yea but Curt kept the same wheel base on the conversion. It would cost way less to just take a 1967 or 68 roller and build a car. I have a feeling more than trailing arms and rear fenders are involved. Also I don't understand why any body would go to soooooo much trouble for a worse performing car in the corners. ??? Nick - the same owner (SS) contacted me & I basically told him that I thought it was not economically viable...

Personally I cannot understand why anyone would even think about doing this.

There seems to be a question why some one would want a SWB car for handling. Shorter wheel base cars of any color turn in faster and provide more nimble handling. Longer wheel base is more stable at speed and makes handling power easier. A short and tight course where power is not a main factor will favor a SWB car (shifter carts!). Porsche's used to be known as small nimble cars that took on longer larger more powerful cars and sometimes beat them. 911's used to be 2.0L, nimble cars, They have grown. not worse or better.
It would be financial sewercide to make a LWB into a SWB. there or plenty of early cars still around to sort out into a nice fun cars especially in the corners

I haven't questioned his motives or his sanity. Yet. If the driveshaft/hub problems can be addressed easily then the rest of the project is reasonably simple. The rear arches can be cut out and 911R glass arches from GT Racing can be grafted in, shortening the body's wheelbase. He also wants a 911R style tank mounted in front of the rear wheel. That may well cause a greater problem. I haven't estimated the cost yet, but will keep you posted.

Talk about sanity; strange things do happen. At some point in the shady past of my '67 911S, somebody decided he wanted the long wheel base. So the rear suspension was replaced with lwb-parts, newer type brakes with cross-drilled vented rotors, adjustable koni's and rs-style rear screens. It all seems to have been done by a professional and works quite well (although I would have been happier with the original set-up). Engine and gearbox are still original. Strange modification? Or was this one more often?
