    Calling all engine # experts...

I (hopefully)just got hold of a 2.4"S" engine for the -72 "S" coupe....The engine # is stamped as follows: AT*63221xx*...it's the "AT" which is bugging me...Can it be an abbreviation of the German word: AusTausch = exchange/Replacement..i.e maybee a factory exchange engine from way back when??( or just wishful thinking,on my part?)

Also the "911/53" for the engine type is stamped in the usual spot, but with somewhat larger caracters than the little "tiny-ones" they usually used.

    Has anyone seen this before?...Chuck,Soterik,Jens,Rick C,Glaverbel,Roger G...anyone...Tabs....yes/No?...Frank....SWB SAM...Ray...?..

Could you take a close up photo of each stamping? I have never seen that either, it would be interesting to get a good look at that.

When you take the shroud off also look for a 3 digit # stamped on the each half of the case on the top of the middle case bolt support. These #s should match telling you that the case halves match each other.

Thank's Brian...These are not the greatest shots,but..... the "stampings" are actually much "clearer" in reality.
I'll look for the case stampings as well, when we'll start taking it apart.
Any info is appreciated...Thank's / Lars...

911/53 stamping...BTW The "AT" in the previous picture is very clear and distinct in real life...It looks very weak in the picture and it's not focused either..

Its a pretty good restamp.. font style is wrong though .. as well as the spacing between numbers for 73'... Its possibly a factory restamped blank case... I wouldn't worry about it..

    I agree with Robert.

    Numbers

Looks good to me, never have I seen or heard about a replacement engine having a serial number stamped on it. Usually a type number only.

Dude... First of all,,, you have probably nothing better to do in Hawaii on you honeymoon !!!..
I have seen factory restamps,, but there not like originals.
Get you glass's on and look again...
On any 73' engine stamping.. Porsche increased the overall spacing of numbers .. The spacing between numbers increased from previous years so if this was 73' factory issue,,, it would have not been possible to add the "AT" in the space provided0.... compare it to the pic I added..

Look again you idiot, the picture he is showing is a 72 engine case not a 73. Remember the engine numbers for year and type are in the opposite position for the engines vs the VIN. So that stamping is correct. I dont need glasses for close up only distance.
