    Correct finish for valve covers

Is the correct finish for the upper valve covers for a 2.2L motor bare metal? Seems to me that the 2.4 and/or 2.7L covers were painted black but the 2.2L were not painted, is that correct? Thanks guys.

Fading memory here, but I believe that both upper and lower valve covers on my '70T were black. I sold the car in '73, so I could be wrong...A tip should your Magnesium covers get too warped or corroded to use...911SC aluminum covers are shaped the same...I have a set of SC covers, powder coated black in my garage, awaiting a future need I hope never comes.

I did the same later covers - have them on the car now
I bead blasted'm first (the castings on mine were a rough) then powder coated them black, then filed off and polished the Porsche scriped.

... I hung up my old mag warped covers in the garage to look at ...

Man, that flash isn't very flatering....

My S motor seems unmolested for the most part and they were black.

    Thanks guys black it is.

I am putting on the Turbo lower covers so I will get a hold of a set of AL upper ones and have them powder coated. Thats looks very nice.

    Brian:

When Mike had my engine pulled, he said that the valve covers were black, and he did the same as Chuck. Painted black, and filed off the letters.

I believe they were natural mag color; dark gray, not painted (in '69).

Seems like the thing to do with these is to switch to the new covers as the mag ones are warped and/or corroded.

When you powder coat the upper ones are there any problems with painting or powder coating the inside of them?

I know if I send mine for power coating that is how they will be returned to me.

The ones I had powder coated were left aluminum on the back sides, as I requested, since I wanted the sealing surfaces bare. A good powder coater should be able to mask them, I'd think...
