Thread: Removal of Wiper Motor and linkages

Removal of Wiper Motor and linkages

Well, I though removing all of the fasteners would be enough to get this out but there appears to be more to this then I thought.

Can anyone give me the hint required to maneuver this out from underneath the dash? Do I have to separate the motor from the linkage?

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is a strap which is bolted to the wiper motor and also to the metal under the dash that holds the wiper motor in place. You will have to seperate it in the middle or remove the dash to get at the top of it!!! Its a pain.

I'm sure you've already done it...but if not...be sure to disconnect your batteries before trying to get the wiper motor and linkage mechanisms out. If it inadvertantly cycles on while your hand is up in there it's very powerful and can do serious damage to you. Good luck with this pain-in-the-rear task.

    Thanks for the tips guys.

I was able to get it out by undoing the motor fasteners and swinging it out of the way. Then the motor and the linkages could be lowered enough to remove it all from the car. I am not to sure if I will be able to install it in the reverse order so maybe I will figure out how the factory did it. I there must be a better way.

Good tip with the battery Richard. I am sure you could really hurt yourself if the motor were to actuate with your fingers in there.

    Best regards,

    Reviving an old thread here
..trying to remove wiper linkage and therefore motor too on a 65. What is this strap you refer to? I suppose bracket is what is meant, but I am struggling to find anything that resembles either.

I've removed the wiper arms and nuts so would a tap on the spindles allow the complete linkage to drop down? I presume we access this area through the trunk, not the dash as has been suggested here.

Lube up those rubber grommets and remove them, remove speedo, should see another attachment looking thru the speedo hole.

Hey Guys. Getting the odometer out of the way and the clock too gave me easy access to the strap that people have mentioned. And sure enough, it is indeed a strap. Two 9mm bolts released the strap from the wiper arm assembly and allowed me to remove the entire unit from under the dash through the trunk.

I've just ordered a set of bushes and c-clips and I'll soon have this rebuilt.

I seem to be missing one of the L shaped arms of which 2 are at each end of the linkage. Hopefully I'll find one here, otherwise it should be a simple enough job for any metal fabricator. I presume all four arms are identical?
