1966 Coupe with a five digit chassis number

    Hello fellow listers:

I have a five digit 1966 coupe with a five digit chassis number. This number is present in the smuggler's box area, dashboard, under the dash (I have the windshield out now for a rotissiere restoration) and the door plate.

What do I have?? It is less than twenty off the prototype numbers and has a five gauge dash and the guages are 1966.

I have been told that the chassis may be a "replacement chassis". The car did not come with seats and the motor was a 2.2L when I bought it in 1980.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Tom

Mabe you have one of the 13 original prototypes made, although only one is thought to exist. What is your VIN? What makes you say its a 66 rather than a 64/65?

    The chassis number is 13440.

The car's COA says 1966 and the guages also say 66.

    Thanks for your speedy response.

Perhaps you could post a pic of the VIN plate and stamping

    Smile early 901

Can you post pics of the car ?
Does the car match up with any of the pre production cars in Tobias Achiele's book ?

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

It sounds to me like there is a "3" missing in front of those 5 digits. That would make it a 66 car. Agree with posting pics of the stamping near the fuel tank and the riveted chassis plate (as well as letting us know the location of this plate...).

    Tom,
The early prototypes had numbers in the 133xx range. Such as Don Meluzio's
    901 prototype which is 13327.

The first prototype for the Targa, which was shown at the Parade in Texas, is
13 360. This car listed as a spare body went to the "Vers'uch" Research group Jan 15, 1965.

There is another car with a number very close to yours, that was also a
research car. Contact Rick Kabel eurotech@together.net for more info.

Thank you all for your replies. I have taken some pictures of the door plate and the gas tank stamping that I have sent to the webmaster as the files are way to big for me to post.
