I have the switch pictured below on my dashboard. It is clearly aftermarket but does not seem to control anything. Anyone have any idea of it's purpose in life (other than giving the driver and passenger something to do at a light)?

I have a toggle switch in the same location in my May 1971 coupe, but not the same switch and no backing plate. Mine controls the electric radio antenna in the right front fender which I'm 90% certain was factory installed. My COA is at work - I'll check Monday.

If this is not a original switch, how would anyone in the world know what it is? It would be a real guessing game. James Bond had a switch like this once, and it dropped a oil slick under the car, so the chase people would spin out!

FWIW, it does not drop an oil slick.![]()

That location is where the gas heater switch is located if the car is so accessorized. Sounds like the PO was adding something and didn't want to drill the dash?

Could have been a booster fan for the heat to get a little help coming from the rear. Any signs this car had AC from new? Often I have seen extra switches in the dash having something to do with extra lighting.
Hi Rick,
The car came with Factory AC. I am guessing some type of auxillary fan or something that allowed the ventilation fan in the AC unit to run without starting the comperessor.
FWIW, next to the haeadlamp pull switch is one of those giant toggle switches that appears to have (at one time) controlled the fog lamps. The fuse block area for the fog lamps is melted and most likely gave a new meaning to "flame-on!"
Neither of them appear to do anything but one always wonders....
