Thread: Green or Tangerine? R or Non-R? These are the Questions.

Green or Tangerine? R or Non-R? These are the Questions.

    Guys,
I bought the 68L with 3.0 engine and running gear advertised on the Pelican board. I have heard alot about bigger displacement motors (3.0-3.6's) in the early cars being a blast to drive , but I have not yet had the pleasure to drive one (not even the one I just bought).
It is currently painted dark burgundy metallic but was originally tangerine. My initial thought as an early 911 purist was to strip the car and repaint to the original tangerine color, but since the car has been lightly flared, has all 911SC running gear along with the 3.0 engine, it doesn't seem to make much diference if the car is the original color anymore - or does it?! This is where the group steps in.
I have seen this 70T targa offered on EBay and elsewhere recently which is painted an early 80's lime green (he states that it is a 1980 color). Coincidentally, it look like in the direct backround of the lime green 911 is a blood orange early 911. I am really starting to lean toward lime green. What color does the group think would be more suitable for a R-clone? Lime green or tangerine? Doe snayone have any pic's of an SWB in original tangerine that they can post to help the decision making process?
Also, while I have no current plans to go with a center fill gas tank (due mostly to cost!), I was thinking about stripping off all of the bumper trim in the fronty and rear as well as the aluminum rocker panels and going simply with the early Porsche script on the rockers and maybe the R turn signals and rear brake lights? What is the groups opinion on that?
So here are the Poll questions:
    1) Lime Green or Tangerine
    2) R or non-R look

If you want to sell the rear bumper trim and it is original, let me know.

Is that the car with theTRE engine?
    Nice.

    Hi John,
Yeah, that's the one. Seemed to be too good to pass up for all of the work done. Color is really the only turn off for me, which is why I am painting it.
As for the trim, I am not sure if it is original. I will let you know when I find out.
Is your car tucked in for the winter?

How about some votes you guys - I have 56 views and only 3 votes so far....

I voted non R simply because I just dont like the taillights. I love the SWB cars when they are de-trimmed and all of that....but really think that those lamps ruin the natural flow of the car.

I'm with Cornpanzer and you already have nice lenses. As for color choices that is a matter of personal opinion. It IS your garage it will reside in. I will throw this out and it has been done , but left an impression with me. Lime Green with Irish Green positive porsche graphics. Same with Tangerine, darker graphics or black will stand out just fine. No trim. Sell those worthless sport seats to me and you have plenty for a centerfill.

My opinion is no, if the car has already been modified so extensively, there is no reason to retain the factory color for "correctness." Go with what you like. It is very fortunate that the original color was tangerine, however, since that is one of the colors you do like and are considering, so in this case you could have both--the original color AND one that you like. That serendipity would be hard for me to ignore and change it to green. I would have to REALLY want a green car to do that.

I am struggling with the same decision on my '68 TRE-built 3.0 SWB car. It is Sand Beige now (and originally), but like Shuie, I have Slate Grey R-look in my mind and can't get it out...

    TT
edit- BTW, the poll doesn't allow us to vote for both color AND "R or not", so I voted tangerine, but I would also vote for the R-look.
