The breakaway type ... might have one laying around. Not sure of condition, either. I'll check tomorrow.

I'm not familiar with what that means to be honest. My 68 had a later model mirror that was stuck to the windscreen.
If you look for a 1968 only Porsche rear view mirror, you are likely to look for a long time and settle for a poor one. However, here is the tip of the day. I believe that in that year, Porsche, M-B, and BMW all used the same mirror. The base was painted a different color, but the connection was the same and the mirror the same. I have made this conclusion from pictures only, but I think it is correct. For instance,,,,, check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-...QQcmdZViewItem
Good luck to you and I hope this helps. -Paul
Wow, you're right, they do look very similar!Originally Posted by Paul Hatfield

Mercedes used two different mirrors with the rough alum finish and the plastic mirror. One is the same as the Porsche 68 mirror. The other has a slightly different shaped arm. Then there is the same shaped arm but covered in a textured rubber covering over the metal arm.
The BMW mirrors are the same concept but, entirely different shapes. The arms are more slender, slightly longer and the flat areas that meet the roof are smaller. Also the mirror itself has the finish like the 69- on mirrors not the pebbled finish of the 68s. All of these mirrors use the same plate size to snap into.
I've got a couple of these to play with.
