Mama Cass Elliot actually drove an older 356 Cabrio and not a 911 in 1967. Nash had the 911 and Stills had an E-Type OTS. Well that's what I gleaned from articles of the day![]()
1971 911S with Factory Recaro Sport Seats, 100% original, Bahia Red/Black
1974 914 2.0 Yellow/Black
2006 Cayman S Artic Silver/Terrecotta (Pending)
When you think in you're in full control, you're just not driving fast enough
I recall a PBS Mamas and Papas video showing Cass standing out of the sunroof of a SWB 911, and driving it, I think.

Bummler's right. It was a 356. There was a exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany last Winter based on the Summer of Love. Only car in the exhibit was Janis Joplin's 356.
I did some reseasrch on the web after the exhibit. I foundout that it was custom painted by one of her roadies. She handed the car over to him and he did the paint work over a 3 week period. When he gave it back to her she was wild about it. It is apretty cool to look at in person for the shock value and the sepcial time it respresents in the history of rock and 60'sculture. But the paint job was done by brush and has the quality of a high school homecoming parade . I peaked at the inside too and the interior looked heavily worn and one of the seat recliner mechanisms was broken. If I rememebr correctly, the dash metal was either white or gray?, while the base color of the rest of the car was red. Not exactly the nicest 356 you would come across - but priceless.....
The Joplin 356 was actually very well done. It took the guy 6 months of painting and he spent a great deal of his time lying on his side painting. I first saw the car when she left it at the Monterey Peninsula Airport for a couple of weeks. I didn't realize it was her's and thought it pretty ugly until I spend some time walking around it studying it. Viewed closely and as an art object it was quite beautiful and the craftsman may not have held up but at the time it was superb! I had a nice chat with her about the car. She saw me walking up to her and gave me one of those "Oh God, another fan" looks but was nice and then delighted when I wanted to know about her Porsche. Mine was parked next to it and it also had some- relatively sedate- airwork on it. She loved her car. I am glad it has a good home.

Dunno what it looks like now but at the time the dash was black. The painter artfully renderd a green snake across the dash with its tail curling around the instruments and finally the head at the glovebox door. The head was a mixture of snake and Janis' face with her mouth screaming wide open. THAT was when I first realized what I was looking at. The snake was also superbly done. I wish I still had some images of it.

A replica sits here (in the city of her birth)...
