Not a must-have. I found it disappointing. There's very little on the early 911s. What is there, is available elsewhere (i.e. Excellence Was Expected, etc.)
OTOH, Frere's "The Racing Porsches" and "Porsche Racing Cars of the 70's" are essential (although these are on the 904/06/07/08/10/17).
not sure where that comment is coming from. It is a must-have. Nothing else is even close on the technical history of the 911 -- which is what makes our cars different from everything else. Frere is a friend of the Porsche family and has factory sources that no one else has.

i have recently started this book which was given to me over the holidays. it's like history channel in book format; good stuff. ex: i had no idea the webers we have were originally designed for a lancia (fulominia or something similar?) which had different intake spacing and thus the manifold w/ slanted runners.

I might be a little harsh. For $20, why would anyone not buy it? But less than 100 pages out of the 470 (Ed. 7) concern Early 911's - that's what disappointed me. While that information is excellent, I don't recall reading anything 'new'. The book seems heavily weighted to the 964/993/996 (5 chapters devoted to the 996!).
