What is going on with Excellence????

Just got my new issue. It includes Steve Thayers 3.8 RSR, the historic Bucholtz 67"S" lightweight, Vic Elfords Targa winning 907 (woulda loved to have written that one!), a all original 67 912 and even an interview with Roger Penske. This one should tie me up for a while!

What is going on with Excellence????

Our infinite car resource called the interent can't be making it easy for the car mags. Mag coverage of current events are (with the exception of the weekly Auto Week) stale compared to internet updates. They make their money with ads, seems like a monthly parts catalog with a couple articles.

Funny to me, tail wagging the dog, mag updates on the internet.
Imho if the mag has it this month it certainly could have been found on the net months ago.

So what's happening? Dunno, don't care.

Unfortunately, an issue that enticing means when I sit on the throne to start reading, I won't be able to stop reading, and be there until my legs go numb. Dammit.

This has been a complaint at one point or another with nearly every magazine I have ever read and is an innaccurate assumption. The fact is, in the magazine industry there is a typical ratio of editorial pages to advertising pages. The more advertising you have, the more editorial you can afford for each issue. Basic economics.

Its true, there is a staggering amount of advertising in Excellence. That is a good thing. It is an indicator that the hobby is doing well and that Excellence is successful. It also means that they can have more editorial pages than most other magazines. This is why we see such comprehensive features of 7 pages or more. Most magazines will do 4 pages on a car feature with a lot less photos and detail. Another benefit to healthy advertising is that you never see Excellence whoring themselves out to advertisers with bogus tech articles, or parts comparison (i.e., we installed so and so's wiper blades and picked up 5 hp!). Unlike many magazines, Excellence has a firm policy that contributers cannot accept free parts for tech stories.

I am not saying all of this because I contribute to them occasionally -its just a fact in the industry. I have always been a fan of the magazine and yes, to be honest, I would much rather get paid for a 7 page story in Excellence than a 4 pager in the other mags I contribute to. There are always nits to pick with any product, but this common advertising gripe is pretty groundless.
