    Values

I've been looking for a car for some time and there has been a lot of talk of late about what are the real values of these cars and whether the ebay phenomenon is for real. Below are the values that Sports Car Market magazine puts on these cars as of 2007. Mind you this is for a condition 2 driver car.

    Yr./model $Buy-$Ask
    '65 $20k-$30k
    '66-'68 $20k-$35k
    '67-'68 2.0 Targa $20k-$38k
    '67-'68 2.0 Coupe $30k-$40k
    '68 "L" $20k-$35k
    '69-'71 "T" $20k-$35k
    '69-'71 "E" $22k-$37k
    '69-'71 "S" $25k-$40k
    '72-'73 "T and E" $20k-$30k
    '72-'73 "S" $30k-$40k

Please don't shoot the messenger, I just wanted to provide another piece of information to the debate.

If you ante up for the Gold membership and can check out SCM's database you'll see that they have very few sales of 911s and just a couple of real S's to base their prices on. For instance, when I looked up '67S, the last sale they had was a SWT back in '98 for $21,850. The reason SCM, Excellence, and CPI etc. are so far off, is there simply aren't many public sales of nice, real, cars. Near as I can tell their "values" are based on historical notions of price, with some sort of annual appreciation percentage added periodically.

You're correct on that. Still, I don't think the high sides of these numbers are not that far off for driver cars. I think condition 1 cars will bring considerably more $$, possibly double these numbers.

My comments are T prices look close but not E and S prices. Today these discussions on valuations tend get polarized pretty quickly. One side will claim a bubble is forming and is ready to pop in regards to early 911 prices. The other side will claim that the cars are finally getting the respect and recognition they are rightly due and prices will continue to climb. My impression is the market has moved upwards pricewise very quickly lately on I don't see any published valuation data to support this. All the valuation sources Excellence, SCM, Market letters etc have issues with how the data is gathered to support their conclusions. So maybe for a middle of the road car they may give some good guidance but cars I see hitting the market right now at those prices are bought very quickly.
