    Period correct support vehicles?

Lately i have had the idea of getting a circa 1968 VW panel Bus, painting it burgandy, with grey porsche script livery on the sides, gutting the interior, and redoing it as a support vehicle for road trips, races, gatherings, camp outs, auto-x's etc. The idea was not only to have a very cool vee-dub, with either a hopped up type 1, or possably a 911 engine for usable hp, but also somthing functional -ie something to cary extra wheels and tires in for auto-x's, luggage and spare parts for my anual cross country trips, camping gear for when i go to races, and just about anything else functional.

has anyone done this? if so im interested in pics, set up, specs ideas etc.

fwiw, im not thinking of anything extremely tricked out, but stock and reliable (except the engine which would be modded or changed to have useable extra hp. anyone who has had a bus at one point or another knows how slow they can be, and how they lack power.. which isnt good if youre crossing the great divide!).

    Type 2 Panel support vehicle

    Harry,

Saw this one @ Emory's Campout last year. Did not open the deck-lid, so not sure if it's stock, but pretty much what you are thinking, no?!

You should check w/ Gary Emory

This would make for a cool logo on the side of the bus.

here we go.. a toy version of exactly what i was looking for.. I wouldjust paint it burgandy with grey lettering though..

anyone have any pics of the real deal one of these, with any details, (period pics are good too!). I am also interested in seeing any other support vehicles of the similar fashon for ideas (such as vans, vw busses and the like as opposed to heavy duty race car transporters)

Here's a couple of Emory busses.... The larger pic is "bagged" to drop the front end on the ground. The small pic (sorry) is of an older double cab that has a 2.5 liter 911 engine in it.

We use to use our '68 Crewcab as a support vehicle for our GGR time trial events. Put all the race tires, gas cans, cloths etc in it. My wife would drive the '73 targa and I would follow in the VW. At that time we had the 2.4E & trans from the the targa in the VW, the targa had a 3.2. Currently the truck has the 3.2 w/46mm webers, crankfire ignition, '84 trans w/7/31 r&p. I grafted in a 911 tunnel, and linkage so I could use a Wevo shifter. Recently installed a pair of Scheel seats. Also having some adjustable shocks made up for a better ride. Should finally be back on the road this weekend.
