Thread: Question about Karmann-bodied 911s

    Question about Karmann-bodied 911s

    Do the Karmann-bodied 911s have a Karmann plate, either in combination with the paint ID plate, or in the same area of the door jamb? Or is there no way other than the VIN to distinguish a Karmann-built 911?

    Stefan, yes I was wondering if the Karmann 911s had a tag like that.

    If you didn't have the tag on your car is there an alternative way to find out if it's a Karmann? Like thru serial numbers?

    Yes, the VIN will identify whether it was built by Porsche or Karmann.

    For '69, the fifth number of the VIN
    0 = Porsche
    2 = Karmann
    (1 = targa)

    For '70, it's the sixth number of the VIN

    The production # from the right-side lower dash area, will also show if the body is from Karmann. The second digit in the prod. # is the same as the VIN # sequence, ie: 0 for coupe, 1 for Targa, and 2 for Karmann coupe.

    For '68, I believe the fifth number in the VIN = 5 for the Karmann built coupes. The picture above in this thread is from my ID plate. '68 had a pretty unique numbering scheme, being the only year with 8 digits. On the earlier cars with 6 digit VINs, I believe the Karmann chassis begins with a 4 instead of a 3, and Targas begin with 5.

    Also, I believe the production number on the early models, until '69, was the same as the VIN, at least it is on my '67 and '68 cars.
