901 shifter reinstall trouble.

I just replaced the coupler, rod bushing and shift socket on my 70T and all went very smoothly. The problem is reattachment of the shifter assembly.

101 projects says to attach the guide bracket to the housing first but that doesn't work as it leaves me no room to tighten the shift rod joint. If I do it with the guide bracket loose on the shift rod I have no way of lifting it up straight to meet the shift housing for reattachment.

I've been at this for 2 hours. I've tried wires hanger, rubber bands, nothing works.
HELP.

Hi Ulrich,

I am not sure I fully understood you. The gear/shifter assembly should take a minute or two to fit. The guide bracket ie the small bracket that has the round bush should be slid over the gear rod first, to do this the ball socket bracket needs to be removed first. Once this is done, simply put the guide bracket in the rough location, the section with the M6 holes goes above the tunnel metal work, then add the gear shifter. I then tend to attach the 2 x M6first and then the 3 x M8.

Alan, never mind. I am such a moron. I did not realize the trailing edge of the guide bracket sandwiches between the bottom of the shifter plate and the tunnel opening. I had it loose inside the tunnel and expected the bolts to snug it up tight.

Once I realized this I had the whole thing back together in 5 mins.
