Help w. my title (advice needed)

    (cross posted with Pelican)

Not quite a year ago, I bought a '71 Targa out of Colorado, but I've had problems titling the car because the VIN doesn't match the Title:
    911 111 1085 = Car Vin
    911 111 085 = Title Vin
Take your pick where the missing "1" goes. Obviously, there was a problem where some typed 5 consecutive ones rather than 6; however, the CO DMV (so far) isn't co-operating.

Even if I prove that the VIN must have 10 #s (pretty easy to prove), I can't prove where the "1" goes...

I have some paperwork, but not enough of a paper trail to establish the VIN. Every '71T Targa had a VIN of 911111XXXX, obviously.

Any thoughts on how to get a correct title from CO, so I can register the car in NM? Any help would be appreciated.

    VIN verification

a VIN verification should clear that up.

the car has more than one place where the REAL VIN appears.
Get the DMV to do a VIN verification....simple as that. Not too many possibilities here.

    Le Zoo is correct.

You need to get a vin inspection from either a Colorado auto dealer or DMV office, then the Colorado DMV should be able to correct the error & print you a title. I'm surprised NM dmv will not do the same & correct the error.
This is actually more common than you might think. If you run into more issues, pm me your contact info & I can get it resolved for you...I'm in the car business (flame suit on )

Does the engine number match the title ?

If it does then I'm sure this would give you the needed additional evidence.

Did the car come from CO? If so and none of the previous ideas work I would suggest the guy you got it from have the title corrected it would easier for him on his end.

Yes, except it's been a year; it's possible, but not necessarily likely

It doesn't seem that the CO DMV will take a NM MVD VIN Verification, so I'd have to take the car up to CO... which I can do, but I definitely don't want to waste the trip if it didn't work out.

If a car dealer can do it, could I have one in NM do it, do you think? The Porsche dealer is 1 hour away, and I have a good relationship with them.

The title unfortunately doesn't have the engine # on it. I have ordered a COA just in case, but obviously it doesn't really improve my situation other than having another "semi official" document (that doesn't really prove anything).

Pretty obvious that this is a data entry error for car #1085.
Do you have any friends in LE? They can usually vouch for you
with the DMV of your state to correct the error. Good luck!

$160 and you will be done or take it back to CO to get the vin verified.
