    oil cooler upgrade question

i'm working on fitting an oil cooler on my 72 e.
with its unique oil tank placement, i know there will be some challenges.
elsewhere it was stated the oil filter mount needs to be machined to accept
a thermostat and fitted with flex hoses.
i removed my oil filter console and it looks like it's already made to take a thermostat (see picture).
did i get lucky and is this the correct console for an oil cooler?
    or is further modification neccessary?
    thanks

    oil cooler upgrade

The bore of the housing needs to be machined slightly larger in diameter, you'll need the thermostat insert to get the exact dimension for your machinist to get the correct fit.

    oil cooler upgrade

Nothing tricky here, you use the same thermostat that you use in the engine case, and you have the machining done to the same diameter as the engine case. And while we're on the subject, I use the Elephant racing hard oil lines to the front cooler, they will make one with the right bend to go up to the 72 oil tank, but you'll need to have made a couple custom lines, from the thermostat housing to the tank, and from the hard line up into the bottom of the tank. We cut out the the crimp-on fittings from old OEM lines and have new hose crimped on them.

Some of the consoles I have seen are property machined, however most are not. Get a thermostat and check it first. The 72 car is easy to install a cooler on. You will need the underbody tabs as well to hold the lines.

    ?

i tried my thermostat, no go, i'll have to have it machined.
what do the mounting tabs look like and how many/where are they placed?
    thanks for the help

    tabs for oil lines

You can buy all the tabs from your Porsche dealer - they are surprisingly cheap. Sorry don't have the part # to hand but look on the Stoddard web site for the oil cooler diagram. Tracking down an original 72 oil cooler is a different story (probably unobtainium) so either a used trombone cooler from the later models - easy to find - & will have compatible connection fittings, also easy to mount onto your battery box. Or use an oil cooler of your choice - unfortunately most do not have the attachment fittings on the "short side" of the cooler as did the original. But the trombone works OK - much of the cooling is due to radiation of heat out along the length of the brass lines rather than the cooler itself.
Did this procedure to a 72 I owned years ago - was pretty straightforward.
    Good luck,

    Part Numbers

Please document as much as possible the part numbers and lengths of hose etc, as I will be going through this same excercise this year.

    While we're at it

I am currently planning a fender cooler upgrade for my 69. I already have the long lines and the line from the thermo to the tank. I am having Chuck at ER supply the necessary fittings & hose to go from the thermo to the engine since I have a 3.0 transplant mated to a 911 trans.

My question relates to mounting the cooler itself inside the front fender. I have opted for the 28 row brass cooler and wonder if I will need the upper and lower cooler supports that Wayne's book recommends for this installation. I believe this applies to '74+ 911. Since longhoods have a battery box, I'm thinking its possible to fabricate some mounts to the batt box. Anyone ever try this with success?
