    Info/advice needed 67 911S Targa 500565S

Ok so I got this thing home. It is a true 1967 911S Targa Vin #500565S. It is VERY, Very, very rusty but it is mostly there with the exception of the original motor, front bumper, 4 1/2" Fuchs and the Recaro Seats. It has 902XXX a 65 2.0 installed and I did not check the transmission number yet. Hopefully that info will be availiable later tonight. This is the info I got from Porsche Classic:

Hello Dave, the car was delivered 31.May`67 to Rittersbacher, kaiserslautern(german dealer) / Motor 961XXX (2000S) / Gearbox 104XXX / Color silvermetallic / Interior leather black / Options additional heating Webasto,antenna,speaker,Recaro-sportseats leather

I can shoot additional pics for anybody that wants them.

Here is the other problem. The car was taken to an auto dismantler under the "Amnesty" program and California DMV has the vin flagged as NEVER to be put back on the road or titled in California and must be destroyed. Destroy one of 718 1967 Targas and likely one of less than one of 250 1967 911S Targas? That leeds me to my question:

    What would you do?

I think that car has more than a problem with the VIN number getting titled.
Was it your intention to spend 3 years and $70,000 on the car, but now that it can't be registered in California the project is in doubt?

Follow your dreams and you can always register it in Oregon. Good luck.

You got to be ****tin' me...

I've got some cars that could be rebuilt and are quite popular these days. Player, you need one of these! This 911 ain't gonna' get you where you need to be unless broke is the destination.
Known as a "Donk" they are very hot in urban areas. There is even a magazine called "DONK".
These are not a low riders but cars that have beens lifted and use wheels as large as 30+ inches. You want to start with a 70's or 80's Caprice or Impala.
Here's one of mine that is in better shape than the 911 and it's been shot about 1000 times. This car has very little rust but there is a high lead content in and around it.

    Good luck!

Flares and a short hood on '67S...if they only knew.

If it was me, I'd go with parts car, but then I've got a '66 that would just love some 'S' brakes & stuff. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Save it for 10 years and slowly collect the parts...you'll be glad you did.

I agree, these cars need to be saved.

Anything can be restored. It's just a matter of time and money. If you have 100.000+ at hand your dream might become true quite fast. Otherwise I can't see substantial value in the rotten parts, but I guess you got the car for more or less free.
The biggest concern for me would be the missing engine, even if you spend all that time and money you still have a non matching numbers car.
If money is a question and you will do it yourself you have my full admiration and I finally understand what it means: America, home of the brave...

    I agree with Peter

If you have a place to store it, I would keep it. Frankly, sell the incorrect engine and possibly the trans to recoup part of your investment, save the ids webers if they are still there , and advertise for the missing engine. Review the registrys for you engine #. It is a long shot but worth the chance. From what I see, the remainder of the car has very little parts value except the rear window parts. I would try to find a correct type motor and trans. Peter is right , in this market plus 10 years it "might" make sense to restore it. I have seen some open air 356's that rival your find on the rust dept that were restored because valuations rose so much it made sense. I do know the old softies gain converts every day and someone, if not you may want to spend the farm on one. Peter is also right about finding the parts now. Best of luck, love mine. tom

    Dave:

I have watched as a friend has done a "slow bleed" restoration on a car that should have been left in the field where it was found. When he was looking at it my advice was to buy the best there was and forget doing a restoration. I knew he was going to sub-contract all the work.
This was over 6 years ago and he could have bought the best there was for $40,000. To date he has close to $70,000 in the restoration and it is NOT DONE. The engine is non-matching as well which doesn't help his cause one bit.

This is crux of the argument:

"Here is the other problem. As this car has a salvage/destroy history it's only good for parts so what else could you do with it? I'd strip and send the carcass to the ground and start looking again.

The "1 of 250" argument has no bearing as it's been classified by CA as a car to be destroyed. I don't believe the California DMV is on your side.

    Tom,

The CA DMV and I have history and I have won in the past. I do have a few friends in high places there and it is an outside chance I could get the title cleared again without being "salvaged". I love a good fight.

I know full well the "buy the best you can afford" thinking. That is why when I bought my first 356 it took a lot of tire kicking and found the one with a sunroof. When I got the COA and found it was delivered with 14 total options I hit the real jackpot. I have them all on a numbers matching car.

As much as I hate to loose this rare of a car to the Porsche community and world, I have to agree with you. My first thought when I found the car was to use it for all the parts to build my "Son of Rat Rod" 356 Outlaw with a 6 cyl and 911 suspension. The Outlaw project is next on the block as soon as the 60 Sunroof is finished this spring. Then I guess I got to overthinking how rare the car is. Thank you for saying the same things one side of my brain has been thinking all along and bringing me back to reality.

    Once again thank you,
