    911R Elford/VanLennep Mugello

This is a new diecast/resin model by Spark who do a reasonable job with accuracy. I don't remember ever seeing photos of the car with the small hood bulges. Are these accurate? What are they?

    Cool model.

I've never seen those 'scoops' either ??? Sort of reminds me of that ST (or whatever) that was found in Portugal (or the Azores) that had the 4 Rally lights molded into the center of the hood right there. I've seen that on a few rally cars, but no open hole scoops like that...

    Curt a great looking model
I have not seen those scoops either and I cant find any pictures of the car at Mugello in 1967.

However the race results from that day (23 july 1967) show the car as chassis number 306 681 driven by Gijs van Lennep/Vic Elford .

This makes it an 911R prototype but I am not sure which one.

I do have pictures of the car (or at least a 911R of the same colour and registration number) later that year at the Tour de Corse later that year (mid October?) a couple of which are attached

I cant see the scoops in these shots. - maybe they were a development dead end - maybe something only for Mugello (the race records show it was hot for the race).

there are rallye lights where the scops were at the TdC but the scoops dont look like mounts for them to me.

Don't have a clue what they are for. I did find a picture of the real car though, were you can clearly see them. Quality of the picture is very low, but at least it is a picture, never seen another one.

    Fantastic find!

are they ducting for brakes instead of thru the horn grills?

    Hugh,

I don't think that the ducting is for the brake cooling, they would rather take fresh air in the spoiler or in the horn grills. But then again I do not know what they were for.
I think I have a source, who might be able to tell me more about it. I will try and find that out.
    All the best,
    JD

It almost looks like one of the inlets still in place on the TDC foto? Maybe we can ask Vic and see if he remembers ....

If you look closely, you can see the RH scoop in all of the TDC photos. Never noticed it before.

In that small photo, they definitely look like fiberglass devices tacked on, as opposed to a special hood molding. Maybe someone can cut thru the suspense and make a phone call for us .... Dave? Or is Vic in Monte Carlo this week?

306681 is R2 according to the factory. Original colour 'Fire red'. HTH
