    Extra wires, 1969 fresh air fan switch harness

    Guys,

    I notice when I re install the cable and fresh air fan switch console in my 1969 that there are two connectors that do not seem to have a home. Where do these wires go?

    One wire is medium blue with a 90 degree female end. The other is a two wire set (one is yellow with a red stripe and the other is black) both terminating in the same 90 degree female connector. All three wires travel in the same bundle with a black plastic sheath and come off of the back of the fresh air switch/cable control assembly.

    Could these wires be electrical control wires for the aux. gas heater and therefore not used on my car? It kind of looks that way from the wiring diagram. If not, what are they there for?

    When I checked the 73 T (now with 2.7 MFI engine), I found that the two wire duo of yellow with red stripe wire and black wire is used as the hot wire for the radio. The single medium blue wire is hanging free. Is this a normal way to provide the hot side of the radio?

    John I checked the diagram the other day and your correct about the Aux. heater does your 73 have a stock radio or aftermarket?

    John, those are the wires for the gas heater installation. The proper radio power wire is a yellow wire from the ignition switch that should be prewired in all cars, radio or not. The yellow radio power wire should be in a vinyl sleeve that will be tucked up on the lower lip of the dashboard running under the steering column and over towards the fresh air vent controls. There may also be a brown ground wire in the sleeve that goes onto the welded spade ground to the left of the fresh air vent controls. If the radio wire has never been used it will be tucked back into the sleeve, pull it out and there will be enough to almost reach the radio, there would then be a yellow wire from the radio and the two would meet at a "supplied with radio installation" inline fuse holder appropriate for the ceramic fuses. As you can see with this car, not everyone cared to do this wiring properly.

    Tony, Always good to hear from Louisville.

    The 2.7 with the aux heater wire going into the radio currently has a period correct Blaupunkt am/fm/sw radio. The Blaupunkt will work, but when I want sounds, I use the boom box I built that sits on the folded down seat backs.

    As it works out, I am the one who wired the radio using the aux heater wire. After reading Ed Mayo's posting, I'll now go out and find the yellow wire and hook things up correctly.

    BTW if you have an emailable copy of the three 65's alongside the Atlas missle in Georgia taken during our caravan to Rennsport last November, could I ask you to send a copy to me at johnandmarsha@fuse.net? I need a picture for the garage wall to fill the spots where my wife made me take down the unPC calendars.

    Nice try for your effort to affix the wiring blame on an anonymous PO. But in the words of the immortal Pogo: "We have met the enemy and they is us". Seeing as I put the radio in, it must have been me. Even though I can not remember what I was doing at the time.

    My current project is replacing the fresh air switch and cables in my 69 912. While I'm under the dash, I'll make sure to find the yellow wire for the 912 radio and then move on to the 2.7.

    Once again, thanks for your help. At least now I know what the aux heater wires look like.

    Trivia question: In 1973 was the aux gasoline heater still an option, or did they just have the wires in the harness for manufacturing convenience?

    John, I was pretty sure the Webasto was an option through 73, but in looking through the parts books it was actually available through 77, although it might have only been available in Euro cars after 73. By the way I never could find a wiring diagram for that decel valve on the 69 912, not even in the special 912 workshop manual supplement, and I can't remember exactly what it wired to. If I get any inspirations I'll let you know.
