    Head Light Relay

    Hi All,

Just installed the new H4 lights, i have installed the head lights just in the process on putting the bulbs in. I have read quiet a bit where the H4 lights with the higher wattage bulbs i.e. 80/100w in the older cars need a relay, I am putting them in a 1972 911 Has anyone done this ? how long does it take is there any guides etc to adding the relay.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Clayton-
The higher wattage headlights will tend to overheat and burn your stalk mounted dimmer switch. Not a good thing. Marcus Sucro (on the big bird)
has a convenient kit available w/relays, wiring and instructions. Just do
a search over there. You can source and build your own a bit cheaper, but
his is pretty simple and complete.

There are several sources for the relay kits: Marcus Sucro, Daniel Stern and Pelican Parts.

I made my own. My wiring diagram for the relays looks like ths:

    Thanks Harry and Mike,

I have installed the headlight bulbs, as the car is currently off the road for the next little bit I will order the relay kit from PP for $25 and put it in.

Harry thanks for the diagram, it was helpful but at $25 with instructions its probably simpler and easier to buy the PP. I don't think the $25 will break the bank, well not yet anyway.

    Cheers

No problem. Each person does what they see best.

Check to be sure the kit includes the fuses from the battery to the headlamps. If not, you may want to add them.

I suggest buying the relays with the relay holders and installing it yourself because the kits that are available are not really designed for the long hood cars. It's fairly straightforward and that way you can position the relays in a more convenient area. I will take a picture of my installation that I just finished the other day and post it later today. Took me about an hour and a half.

    Frank...

I have a complete relay kit except for wires which you cut to size for your installation. $75.00 + shipping.

Hi John, I will try to do it myself... Thanks for the offer. Maspirito, looking forward to see the pictures of the installation.
